The Offices of the President and Vice President for Research at the University of Utah are pleased to announce the appointment of Rena D’Souza, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., as Associate Vice Provost for Research. In this new administrative role, Dr. D’Souza will initiate and lead important campus-wide and global initiatives that advance the university’s research mission.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with someone with Dr. D’Souza’s impressive experience and reputation on the development of new research initiatives,” says Thomas N. Parks, Ph.D., the University of Utah’s senior research officer.
As a clinician-scientist, Dr. D’Souza is internationally known for her contributions to the fields of craniofacial and tooth development, genetics and regenerative dental medicine, for which she has sustained independent funding for over 25 years.
She served as President of the American Association for Dental Research from 2012 to 2013, as a member of the National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Council from 2008 to 2012 and, more recently, on the Physician-Scientist Workforce, a task force of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. D’Souza is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was recently inducted into the German National Academy of Sciences. She has received numerous awards for student mentoring as well as the prestigious Presidential Award for Research Excellence and Leadership from the Texas A&M Health Science Center in 2010.
Previously, Dr. D’Souza served as Dean of the University of Utah School of Dentistry.
