The American Dental
Education Association (ADEA) Board of Directors has named Michael S. Reddy, D.M.D.,
D.M.Sc., the next Editor of the Journal
of Dental Education (JDE). Dr. Reddy is Dean of the University of California, San
Francisco, School of Dental Medicine. Previously he served as Dean of the University
of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry (UAB SOD). While on the faculty at
UAB SOD, he was Chair of the Department of Periodontology, former Assistant Dean
for Planning and Clinical Activity, and senior scientist in multiple UAB
research centers, including the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and the
Center for Aging. Dr. Reddy received a D.M.D. and certificate in periodontology
from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and a D.M.Sc. from Harvard
University.
Dr. Reddy was a Past Chair
of the ADEA Council of Deans and recently left his seat on the ADEA Board of
Directors as the Board Director for Deans. He previously served on the JDE
and JADA Editorial Review Boards, was an Associate Editor of the Journal
of Periodontology and Editor of Clinical Advances in Periodontics.
He has contributed more than 130 original reports, eight book chapters, 136
abstracts and papers, and nearly 160 invited lectures and presentations.
An internationally-recognized
master clinician in periodontal therapy and dental implants, Dr. Reddy’s
research focuses on interrelationships between oral infections and overall
health and regenerative medicine approaches in the oral cavity. He has received
continual NIH funding for more than 25 years and been awarded nearly 60 funded
grants as an investigator or co-investigator. An examiner for the American
Board of Periodontology, he has served as a member or committee chair of
national and international associations and societies, including the Joint
Commission on Dental Accreditation. He is a recipient of the Clinical Research
Award from the American Academy of Periodontology and the 2016 William J. Gies
Periodontology Award from the William J. Gies Foundation for the Advancement of
Dentistry of ADEA and the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Reddy was
also a member of the ADEA Leadership Institute Inaugural Class of 2000.
Dr. Reddy will succeed
Nadeem Y. Karimbux, D.M.D., M.M.Sc., who was appointed JDE Editor in
2011. Dr. Karimbux announced he was stepping down from the JDE
Editorship when he was named Dean of Tufts University School of Dental
Medicine, beginning July 1, 2019.

State University Health New Orleans School of Dentistry. “Without a doubt, the
impact he will have in this role will be monumental.”
