Following six years of dedicated service as Dean of Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine (Stony Brook SDM), Mary Truhlar, D.D.S., M.S., will step down from this role at the end of June and return to her passion for teaching through her Professorship within the Department of General Dentistry. Dr. Truhlar, having spent the near entirety of her professional career serving Stony Brook SDM, looks forward to continuing to do so with a focus on developing the reach of interprofessional programs and the provision of oral health care to the underserved and vulnerable populations.
During her time as Dean, Dr. Truhlar worked to increase the size of dental school classes; modernize many of the educational facilities within the school; launch the Center for Implant and Digital Technology in 2019, a digital dentistry workspace; and cultivate philanthropic support of the school. In the educational realm, Dr. Truhlar and her team launched the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology advanced education program in July 2017 as New York’s only CODA-accredited program in this dental specialty and, at the time, one of only 10 such programs in the country. Also, that year the Stony Brook SDM was selected as one of five dental schools nationally to pilot a Digital Dentistry Curriculum developed by the American College of Prosthodontists. In the clinical arena, the Partnership to Advance Collaborative Education Center was established in 2015. It was awarded a 2018 Honorable Mention for its work with “At-Risk and Vulnerable Communities” by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Interprofessional Education Collaborative.
Allan Kucine, D.D.S., Associate Dean for Information Technology, will assume the role of Interim Dean beginning July 1. Dr. Kucine received his D.D.S., from the Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, performed a residency and chief residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, a profession in which he is board certified, and was recruited to the Stony Brook SDM in 1990. He has held many roles at Stony Brook SDM, including Director of the Pain Control Service; Acting Chairman, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Associate Dean for Curriculum and Postdoctoral Programs; Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs; and Risk Manager for the Dental Clinic.
