Students from the Dallas College School of Health Sciences Dental Hygiene Program were honored with this year’s SMILES Volunteer of the Year Award from the Sealing Molars Improves the Lives of Every Student (SMILES) program at the Arlington Independent School District (ISD), based in Arlington, TX.

“You and your students’ enthusiasm and passion for helping us to promote dental health education among elementary school students have made a significant impact on our community. Your willingness to provide the time and expertise of your hygiene students to help educate young minds about the importance of oral hygiene, as well as help to provide them with fluoride and sealants, is truly commendable, and we are incredibly grateful for your invaluable support. You have undoubtedly made a difference in the lives of countless Arlington children, and we are grateful for your continued support,” said Lilia Ortiz-Grelard, M.H.L., RDH, Interim Executive Director and Clinical Director of Dental Health Arlington, in the award letter to Lisa Mayo, M.H.A., B.S.D.H., RDH, the Academic Chair for Dental Hygiene, Dental Assisting and Surgical Technology at Dallas College.

Throughout the year, Dallas College dental hygiene students visited various Arlington elementary schools, bringing dental equipment, promoting good dental hygiene and providing preventive dental care for elementary school children in underserved areas of the community.
