Call for Nominations for the ADA CDEL Committee on Recognition of Specialties and Interest Areas in General Dentistry

The ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure (CDEL) is seeking nominations for a General Dentist/Educator vacancy on its Committee on Recognition of Specialties and Interest Areas in General Dentistry (Recognition Committee). The committee is a standing committee of the CDEL responsible for matters related to the recognition of dental specialties, specialty certifying boards and interest areas in general dentistry. Specifically, this committee proposes to CDEL new and/or amendment to ADA policies related to recognition. The committee also is tasked to review applications for specialty recognition as posted by the National Commission on Recognition of Dental Specialties and Certifying Boards and recommend what action, if any, CDEL should take during the comment period.

The six-member committee, chaired by a CDEL member, includes two practitioners (one of whom is a general dentist and one dental specialist), two educators/researchers (one of whom is a general dentist and one dental specialist), and an additional CDEL member that serves in a vice-chair capacity.

The council selects committee members using the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be a current ADA member;
  • Devote the majority of time to education/research; have a record of scholarly activity, including publications in refereed journals (educator/research member only);
  • Have a record of service within a university and with a professional dental organization (educator/researcher member only);
  • Be able to devote the necessary time to committee activities (two-three one-hour conference calls annually plus two hours of preparation prior to meeting);
  • Have familiarity with issues and association policies related to the specialty recognition process;
  • Demonstrate willingness to abide by association policies related to conflict of interest and confidentiality;
  • Demonstrate willingness to be objective in the consideration of matters reviewed by the committee;
  • Have sufficient expertise to analyze survey data received in conjunction with specialty recognition applications; and
  • Have access to the internet and email.

In considering appointments to this committee, CDEL strives to balance representation among general dentists and specialists and geographic distribution. Additionally, consideration is given to achieving overall balance on the committee including underrepresented groups and women.

Individuals are appointed by the council to a one-year term and are eligible for reappointment for a maximum of four years. Members currently serving on this committee include: Dr. Jason A. Tanguay, Montana, CDEL Member and Chair; Dr. Rachel A. Maher, Delaware, CDEL Member and Vice-chair capacity; Dr. Mehrdad Favagehi, Virginia, Specialty Dentist/Practitioner; Dr. Scott Kim, California, General Dentist/Practitioner; and Dr. Reginald Taylor, Texas, Specialty Dentist/Educator. In October 2024, Dr. Debra A. Woo, California, General Dentist/Educator will be completing her term on this committee. Accordingly, the council is seeking nominations to fill the General Dentist/Educator vacancy.
