In May 2024, the
South Puget Sound Community College’s (SPSCC) Dental Assisting Program hosted an open house event attended by over 100 prospective students, alumni, local dentists and clinical staff. Attendees were particularly drawn to the program’s use of new
technologies, including state-of-the-art intraoral scanners, such as iTero and Medit i700, and the historic pictures of the program dating back to the 1960s.

“Putting together the historical pictures was a very labor-intensive task but worth the months of work. The display of pictures that now line the hallway was one of the most popular attractions of the night. Everyone loved seeing the history of the program and how things have changed
through the years. Alumni especially liked finding themselves in class pictures,” said Cozette Polzin, Dental Assistant in SPSCC’s Dental Clinic and one of the event organizers. “Everyone who attended was able to see the positive changes the program is making to help strengthen the current workforce
without compromising the standards SPSCC sets for our graduates.”
Since the 1960s, SPSCC’s Dental Assisting Program has been a cornerstone of excellence in dental education in the South Sound region of Washington state. With a history spanning over six decades, the SPSCC program has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of the dental profession

SPSCC’s Dental Assisting Program has recently undergone updates focusing on enhancing accessibility and streamlining the educational journey for students. The program has reduced its core curriculum from five quarters to just three, allowing students to earn an associate in applied
science degree in dental assisting quickly while still meeting the rigorous standards set by the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
To simplify the enrollment process, SPSCC has eliminated the special enrollment application requirement. This change fosters a more inclusive admissions process, allowing prospective students to connect directly with faculty members and establish connections within the program. An
orientation session scheduled one week before the start of classes has also been added to ensure that students receive essential guidance and support as soon as possible. Looking ahead, the dental assisting program aims to offer two start dates. This flexibility will accommodate the diverse needs of students
and further expand access to the program’s continuously improving curriculum.

SPSCC remains unwavering in its commitment to providing ample clinical experience. Students benefit from two full quarters of clinical practice, including a quarter spent at the on-campus dental clinic. This hands-on training is integral to preparing students for the realities of
professional practice and ensures they graduate with the skills and confidence needed to excel in the field of dentistry.
SPSCC’s Dental Assisting Program is dedicated to setting the standard for excellence in dental education. Through incorporating innovative technologies into coursework, the streamlined admissions process and an emphasis on clinical experience, the program equips students with the
knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in today’s dynamic health care landscape.
