Monty MacNeil, D.D.S., M.Dent.Sc., Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors, has declared 2018–19 The
Year of the ADEA Chapter with the goal to promote awareness of
ADEA Chapters for Students, Residents and Fellows and their mission to increase knowledge of and interest in academic dental careers. ADEA staff, in conjunction with members of the ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows, have placed special emphasis on growing ADEA
As of early March, ADEA has grown ADEA Chapters by 36% compared with last year, with 49 ADEA Chapters officially registered through ADEA headquarters. ADEA Chapters exist at 47 U.S. dental schools, one Canadian faculty of dentistry and one U.S. allied dental education
Several activities and events have taken place throughout the year to commemorate The Year of the ADEA Chapter, including ADEA Chapter Awareness Month last October. A second ADEA Chapter Awareness Month happened in February 2019.
During ADEA Chapter Awareness Months, ADEA Chapters hosted activities to promote awareness about both ADEA and the purpose of ADEA Chapters—to promote academic dental careers.
Following are a few highlighted events that took place at ADEA Chapters across the country:
- Representatives from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine spoke to a group of high school students about academic dental careers at the Sports and Medical Science Academy in Hartford, CT.
- Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry sponsored a “Why I Teach” faculty panel.
- A.T. Still University Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health sponsored a book club event, reading Teeth by Mary Otto.
Attending the 2019 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition? Join us during a culminating event closing out The Year of the ADEA Chapter on Sunday, March 17, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Central Time. The Celebrating Academic Careers Reception honors ADEA COSRF Chapter Award
Recipients and the ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program. The event, sponsored by Sunstar Americas, will showcase the work of exemplary ADEA Chapters and ADEA Academic Dental Careers Fellows.
