The ADEA/ W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) Allied Dental Education Leadership (ADEL) Training Convening was held in San Diego from May 31 to June 1, 2018. The leadership training focus was derived from two prior sessions—Leading Change: Leadership Training Strategy for Inclusion and Academic/Community Partnerships (2016 and 2017, respectively). The ADEA/WKKF Minority Dental Faculty Development and Inclusion (MDFDI) grant’s focus on allied dental leadership created an opportunity to develop the capacity of allied dental leadership in the changing dental workforce. MDFDI grants have also supported the concept of new dental models in the national effort to increase access to dental care, especially in Dental Health Professions Shortage Areas (DHPSAs) throughout the United States.

This year’s meeting continued to build on lessons learned from the six-year ADEA/WKKF Minority Dental Faculty Development (MDFD) and the ADEA/WKKF MDFDI pilot programs, which served as catalysts for change. MDFDI grants focused on allied dental leadership in the dental team. Deans and allied dental program directors were invited to attend this unique opportunity to develop leadership skills in health care transformation, mentoring, outreach and capacity building for compassionate humanistic environments. David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., Founding Director and Senior Adviser of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute and the 16th U.S. Surgeon General, presented the keynote address, titled “The Elements of Leadership and the Quest for Health Equity.”

Discussion group sessions were led by dental MDFD program leaders from Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota and Washington, DC. The cross-disciplinary, interactive sessions focused on issues developed from five commissioned research papers: leadership, new models of delivery, health equity, interprofessional education and academic/community partnerships. The papers will appear in the Journal of Dental Education in November 2018. ADEA will continue to bridge dental and allied dental leadership training in the future.

Presentations from the Allied Dental Education Leadership Training Convening may be downloaded from the ADEA website.
