The 2013 ADEA Fall Meetings, held October 24–26 in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma, focused on the theme, “Embracing Technology in Teaching and Learning.” The Opening Plenary Session
on Thursday afternoon featured an engaging presentation by technology visionary Leonard Brody. His presentation,
"730 Days from Now," reflected on the state of technology today and how it would affect the dental education
community in the near future. An interesting point Brody made was how the dental community as a whole isn't
embracing technology as much as it could while offering suggestions to promote change and bring the field into the
On Friday morning, attendees heard from higher education thought leaders and dental educators engaged in
incorporating educational technology in classroom and clinical instruction during the Joint Plenary Session, “The
Impact on Pedagogy and Student Learning.”
Eugene Anderson, Ph.D., ADEA Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President, and Carolyn Jarmon, Ph.D., Vice
President of the
Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT), led a discussion on innovative uses of technology. Dr. Jarmon’s part
of the discussion provided an analysis of using technology within NCAT through an extensive course redesign.
Cynthia Amyot, M.S.D.H., Ed.Spec., Ed.D., Professor and Director of Distance Education and Faculty Development at
the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Dentistry, and Harold Henson, RDH, M.Ed., Associate Professor,
Director, Simulation, and Director at the Center for Teaching and Learning at The University of Texas School of
Dentistry at Houston, led the second half of the discussion with case studies from their respective institutions.
Dr. Amyot focused on transitioning a pharmacology course for dental students to an online delivery format, while Dr.
Henson focused on the use of virtual patients in clinical education.
The discussion received positive feedback and prompted enthusiastic discussion from participants. To view select
