The ADEA Institutional Capacity Building (ADEA ICB) portfolio recently held the 2015 ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) Summer Liaisons Meeting. Held in Austin, TX, June 9–11, the conference theme was “Drilling Down: Assessing the New Competencies,” which was developed by a panel of four ADEA CCI liaisons to address topics pertinent to their peers. ADEA CCI faculty liaisons serve as change agents within their home institutions, and their work during the ADEA CCI meeting has had a broader impact on curricular reforms in the United States. Reform ideas that began at ADEA CCI and were instituted at various dental schools were subsequently published in a 2006 article in the Journal of Dental Education titled “The Dental Education Environment.” Those reforms were used in the development of CODA standards.

ADEA gathered a diverse body of educators, including multi- and first-year ADEA CCI liaisons, to discuss how to rally and celebrate change at their home institutions. This year’s discussion centered on the assessment aspect of new CODA competencies. Interest in the topic was very strong. Attendance at the meeting was up 40% from the previous year.

The program opened with a review of the past, present and future of ADEA CCI by Dr. Eugene Anderson, ADEA Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President. Dr. Lily Garcia, Professor and Associate Dean for Education at The University of Iowa College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics, discussed emerging trends affecting the future for dental education.

Two schools then presented “This Is What We Did: Assessment Practices from Institutions That Recently Underwent Accreditation.” Faculty members from both a new and a traditional dental school, East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine and University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry respectively, shared their best practices for meeting new accreditation standards.

Prior to ADEA CCI, participants viewed a webinar on assessment on new CODA competencies. In the webinar, liaisons were given case studies based on the new standards and then given several options for assessment tools and asked how to measure the case against the new standards. During ADEA CCI Summer Meeting, liaisons shared their findings with fellow attendees during a Webinar Interactive Activity: Assessment 101 session.

Finally, guest speaker Dr. Trudy W. Banta, presented on outcome assessment. She is the recipient of 10 national awards for her work and has written or published 18 volumes on assessment. To wrap it up, liaisons learned how to bring new assessment techniques back to their institutions as well as how to be change leaders during the final Home Institution Action Plan/How to Lead Change-Action session.
