CorporateDentistryOn May 16, Gov. Jay Inslee (D-WA) signed SSB 5322 into law. The law provides that only dentists licensed in the state of Washington may own dental practices in the state and confirms that dentists may contract with third parties to provide support services.

The law also prohibits third parties from interfering with a practicing dentist’s independent clinical judgement.

Examples of such interference include the following (this list is not exhaustive):

  • Limiting the time spent with a patient or performing dental services.
  • Placing conditions on the number of patients treated or procedures created.
  • Limiting or imposing requirements on a dentist’s treatment decisions.
  • Interfering with access to patient records or a refund of a payment.

The law also provides whistleblower protection for those reporting activities that may constitute the unlicensed practice of dentistry.

The effective date of the new law is July 23.
