The Iowa legislature passed HF 202 establishing a retired
volunteer license for retired dental professionals. Governor Terry Branstad
signed the bill into law on March 31, 2015.
This licensure will allow retired dentists and
dental hygienists to provide pro-bono oral health services. To apply for the
license, the dental professional must have held an active license within the
past five years (or apply for a waiver by demonstration of knowledge). There is
no fee to apply for the retired volunteer license, and those practicing under
such a license are barred from charging for services. Retired licensees will be
subject to all rules and regulations governing the practice of dentistry or
dental hygiene.
