studentloanscrabbleOn Oct. 19, HB 369 was pre-filed for the 2018 legislative session. The bill as currently written establishes the Dental Student Loan Repayment Program to support dentists who practice in public health programs located in dental health professional shortage areas and medically underserved areas. The funding for the program would be subject to the availability of state funds, and the program would be administered by the Department of Health. Individual loan repayment awards may not exceed $50,000 per year per eligible dentist. A participant in the loan program is eligible to receive funds for at least one year, up to a maximum of five years.

The bill text states the following in support of the Dental Student Loan Repayment Program: “The [Florida] Legislature recognizes that maintaining good oral health is integral to overall health status and that the good health of residents in this state is an important contributing factor in state economic development. Better health, including better oral health, increases workplace productivity, reduces the burden of health care costs, and improves the cognitive development of children.”
