Winter 2016: Social Media

If you were a regular viewer of The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2012, you may remember a particularly cringe-worthy episode titled You Posted That on Facebook? During the episode, Ms. DeGeneres caught members of her audience off guard when she broadcasted videos and other images from their Facebook accounts.

Today, the ability of individuals to embarrass themselves through social media is hardly surprising, but such missteps can have serious consequences for students and for our institutions, as the dental education community knows all too well. This issue of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger focuses on what we can and should do to reduce such problems and prepare our students to use social media to enhance rather than undermine their professional reputations.

In our Guest Perspective, we hear from Dr. Sharon Turner, former Dean and Professor Emerita, University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, and one of the authors of a two-part exploration of “Social Media in the Dental School Environment,” published in the Journal of Dental Education. Then in our Campus Spotlight, we visit the The Ohio State University College of Dentistry to learn how that institution developed its social media policy. Finally, in our Faculty Spotlight, we meet Dr. Dieter Schönwetter at the University of Manitoba College of Dentistry, who has taken a page from The Ellen DeGeneres Show playbook to drive home the importance of e-professionalism to his students.

If your school has yet to create or adopt a social media policy, these articles will give you food for thought and some concrete examples of steps you can take to establish institutional policies for the use of social media.

Anthony Palatta, D.D.S., Ed.D., Chief Learning Officer
