Each year, ADEA recognizes achievement and distinction among its members. The following dental educators, researchers and students were honored at the 2015 ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition in Boston, MA.

Dr. Thomas F. Nowlin served in several roles within the Council of Sections and was well known for his collegiality, positive attitude, creativity, honor, ethics and dedication to the craft of dental education. This award honors his memory, contributions, and leadership in the ADEA Council of Sections by recognizing an ADEA section for exceptional demonstrated activities.

Since 1994, ADEA has promoted the advancement of women in dental education by providing the opportunity for a full-time woman faculty member with a primary teaching appointment in a predoctoral, or an advanced dental education program, to explore issues affecting women faculty through a three-month scholar-in-residence program.The program honors Enid A. Neidle, former President of ADEA (1985-86). Under her leadership, ADEA adopted its policy of promoting the advancement of women in dental education.

Jeanne C. Sinkford, D.D.S., Ph.D., was the first woman to become a dean of a U.S. dental school (Howard University College of Dentistry). She is a renowned scholar and champion of the advancement of women in dental education, the dental profession and the medical sciences. The Sinkford scholarship provides the opportunity for a dental educator who is closely aligned with the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion to participate in the ADEA Leadership Institute.

The Volpe scholarship provides an annual opportunity for one mid-career dental school educator who has shown evidence of leadership potential and has been accepted into the ADEA Leadership Institute. This award was established by a generous commitment by Dr. Anthony R. Volpe to the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and its ADEAGies Foundation.

Learn more about the ADEA Preventive Dentistry Scholarships

The ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship is awarded to an individual pursuing allied dental education studies at the baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degree level. The scholarship memorializes the 30-year dental education career of Linda Rubinstein DeVore. Prof. DeVore was active in dental hygiene education, scholarship and public service. She served as President of the American Association of Dental Schools (now ADEA) in 1994 and as the 1997-98 President of the Supreme Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha, the national honorary society of the dental hygiene profession.
