 The Condition of Education 2009: Faculty Salaries, Benefits and Total Compensation 

Data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) shows that average faculty salaries rose just 2 percent between 1999-2000 and 2007-2008, compared to a 14 percent increase during the 1980s. 

Other findings:

  • Total compensation (salary plus benefits) was 5 percent higher in 2007-2008 than in 1999-2000.
  • Average compensation totaled $90,800 ($71,100 salary plus $19,800 in benefits).
  • The value of benefits increased 19% between 1999-2000 and 2007-2008.
