 2008 Survey of Dental Practice - Complete Three-Report Set (November 2009) 

The ADA's 2008 Survey of Dental Practice is divided into three separate reports.

Volume 1: Characteristics of Dentists in Private Practice and Their Patients

This report profiles the personal and professional characteristics of dentists in private practice, including:

  • Gender differences
  • Employment status
  • Practice hours and size, and
  • Number of operatories

Patient characteristics are also revealed, including:

  • Visits per hour, per week, and per year
  • length of appointments, and
  • scheduling.

Volume 2: Employment of Dental Practice Personnel

According to this ADA report, dental hygienists working for an independent dentist in 2007 earned an average of $36.60 per hour. Full-time dental hygienists earned $34.30 per hour, while part-time dental hygienists made $38.20 per hour. 

In addition to compensation data, this report catalogs:

  • Average number of non-dentist staff employed
  • Average salary for dental hygienists and chairside assistants
  • Time spent in the practice
  • Average length of employment, and
  • Other statistics for dental team members employed by private practicing dentists. 

Volume 3: Income from the Private Practice of Dentistry

Track the practice expenses, net income, and gross billings of independent dentists by:

  • Age
  • Years since graduation
  • Hours worked
  • Employment status, and
  • Region.
