Submitting to the Journal of Dental Education 

The Journal of Dental Education has moved to an electronic submission and review workflow-based system. Working with ScholarOne Manuscripts, the JDE will now accepts all submission at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. Authors can upload manuscripts directly to the website, receive email notifications, and track their submissions online through the editorial and review process.

Where can I submit a manuscript for the Journal of Dental Education?

Submissions to the Journal of Dental Education must be made online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. Accounts can be created under “Register here” on the Journal of Dental Education submission login page. 

Can I submit my manuscript by mail?

No, the Journal of Dental Education accepts only submissions made online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. If you have any questions, you may contact Dr. L. Jackson Brown, Editor, at jbrown7520@verizon.net.

Who can I contact if I have questions about the submission process?

What are your manuscript word limits?

The Journal of Dental Education limits all titles to 100 characters and all abstracts to 500 words. There is no restriction on word count for the body of an article.

What if I don’t know if the material is appropriate for the Journal of Dental Education?

The Journal of Dental Education welcomes submissions that report research and address issues in the following areas.

i. Critical Issues in Dental Education: Challenges and opportunities pertinent to the future directions of dental education.
ii. Milieu in Dental School and Practice: Sociostructural and psychological issues that represent challenges or opportunities to improve the environment of dental education or practice.
iii. Educational Methodologies: Implementation and evaluation of innovative curriculum, instructional, and assessment techniques.
iv. Evidence-Based Dentistry: Methods and techniques to incorporate the latest evidence-based knowledge into dental education.
v. Faculty Development: Enhancement of faculty skills in teaching, scholarship, patient care, and management, including faculty recruitment and retention.
vi. Transfer of Advances in Sciences into Dental Education: Strategies to incorporate information and techniques that are based on sound scientific studies into dental education.
vii. International Dental Education: Challenges and opportunities faced by dental education in countries throughout the world.
viii. From the Students’ Corner: Original contributions (based on research, experience, or opinion) from predoctoral dental or dental hygiene students in which they are the primary author/s.
ix. Perspectives: General thought pieces on dental education, including the forces acting upon it that will shape its future.

Once submitted, manuscripts will be reviewed by the Journal of Dental Education Editor for relevancy.

How will I know my manuscript has been received?

Each author and co-author will receive an email once their manuscript has been successfully submitted. You can track the progress of your submission through the editorial and review process by logging in at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled and clicking “Author Center.”

What languages are submissions accepted in?

All manuscripts must be written in English and submitted exclusively to the Journal of Dental Education in order to be considered for publication. Follow American (rather than British) English spelling and punctuation style.

If I want to submit an unsolicited review article, how do I contact the Journal of Dental Education Editorial Office?

I have a ScholarOne Manuscripts account, but the submitting author created another for me. Can I merge these accounts?

Yes, duplicate ScholarOne manuscripts accounts can be merged. Send an email to allenc2@adea.org with the full name of the account holder and all email addresses associated with duplicate accounts. You must indicate which email address should be the primary contact.

Can I submit a manuscript using Endnote?

Yes, the Journal of Dental Education welcomes submissions using Endnote. These submissions can be made at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled.com. Just choose “click here to submit an Endnote manuscript” in your “Author Dashboard” after logging in.

What are the guidelines for preparing a manuscript for submission?

The Journal of Dental Education considers manuscripts submitted electronically, prepared in Microsoft Word. Authors are urged to follow the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals.” These requirements, developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, are now in their fifth edition (1997) and can be found in the New England Journal of Medicine 1997;336:309-15 and on that journal’s website.

You can find specific procedures for the Journal of Dental Education in the “Instructions for Authors,” located in the instructions and forms link at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. When an article has been accepted, authors should follow the “Production Guide for JDE Authors” (also available on the ScholarOne website) in preparing the final version of the article.

I am not an author, but I want to be a reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education. How do I apply?

Ceate an account at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. Make sure to complete your profile, as this data is used in selecting appropriate reviewers. If chosen as a reviewer, you will be sent an email with further instructions.
 
I switched institutions, moved, etc., and need to update my account information.

Account information can be changed once logged in to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. Just click “Edit my Account” link in the upper-right hand side of the screen. Once you have made the necessary changes, click finish to save your changes.

Where are the required JDE Conflict of Interest and JDE Publication Agreement Forms?

All required forms can be found in the instructions and forms link at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jdentaled. Forms should be filled out electronically and uploaded during the “File Upload” section of the submission process.

Do I have to submit my article all at once?

No, you do not have to complete your submission in one session. Ensure that you save your progress before exiting the website. You may return to your submission by clicking on “Unsubmitted Manuscripts” in your author dashboard once you have logged back in.  
 
How do I order reprints?

Authors are given the opportunity to order reprints of their articles and are urged to do so at the time the issue is printed for the most timely and efficient service; however, reprint orders may be made at any time after publication of the issue. The price of reprints varies with the page count of the article and the quantity of reprints ordered. Reprint orders should be submitted to Merideth Menken, Publications Business Manager. A copy of an individual article may also be acquired online, whether by the authors or other readers, by visiting www.jdentaled.org. Generally, the JDE permits copying of articles for the noncommercial purpose of educational and scientific advancement. Requests for permission to copy or reprint articles should be directed to the Publications Business Manager.
