ADEA Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Program

For more than a decade, ADEA has addressed leadership development through educational programming, with the goal of preparing promising faculty for leadership positions in dental and higher education. ADEA began offering leadership development programming specifically for allied dental educators in June 2002.

If you are an allied dental faculty member who would ultimately like to assume more administrative and leadership responsibilities, or if you are an allied dental program director who would like leadership education, the ADEA Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Program (ADFLDP) is for
you. It imparts fundamental knowledge of key leadership principles and practices as they relate to leadership in allied dental education.

The 2009 ADEA Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Program will take place June 10-13, 2009, at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa in Savannah, Georgia. The deadline for receipt of nomination packages is March 31, 2009. To access the online application, visit http://adeamoss.adea.org/webapps/adldconf.

What will I learn about at the ADEA ADFLDP?

• Prominent theories and models of leadership
• Leadership in the context reframing organizations
• Managing conflict
• Mentoring and peer coaching
• Negotiation
• Personality types and their effect on leadership
• Team building
• Policy issues and advocacy

Plus you will develop a one-year professional development plan.

What should I expect from the ADEA ADFLDP?

The interactive program involves self and peer assessment exercises as well as readings to be completed prior to attending. Case studies augment some topics. Expect an intense schedule with assignments to be completed in the evenings. Throughout the program you will have the chance to receive individual coaching from experts in leadership development.

How can I be selected to attend?

You must be an individual member of ADEA, be nominated by an allied dental program director or allied health dean, and complete a nomination package. The nomination package has four parts:

• A completed online application form
• Your biography as a narrative, not to exceed 250 words
• A letter of nomination and support from your program director or dean
• Your two-page essay in response to specific questions about leadership

A completed nomination package, received by the deadline, will be reviewed by a committee of the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors. Up to 21 participants may be selected. Notifications will be made no later than May 1, 2009.

What is the cost to attend?

If you are selected, you will be assessed a registration fee according to your institution’s ADEA membership status:

Institutional Member $499
Institutional Nonmember $650

An invoice for your registration fee will be sent with your acceptance letter. You will be responsible for your travel and hotel expenses. Meals and materials are included in the program registration fee.

What can I expect after I attend the ADEA ADFLDP?

You will find that you have a tremendous expansion of the network of colleagues with whom you can strategize about professional issues. Your confidence in approaching your organization’s challenges will be more solid. Your approach to teaching and learning will be diversified.
