ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation Dental Research Scholarship 

Purpose
In recognition of the significant contribution of William J. Gies, Ph.D., to dental research, this program seeks to identify students who may have a unique interest or predental experience that might lead to a career in dental research. The Gies Dental Research Scholarship is awarded every two years.

Overview
The total scholarship is $35,000 paid to the institution over a four-year period. By the end of the fourth year, a total of four students will have participated in the program. In year one, the school receives $3,500 for one entering first-year student to participate in the program; in year two, the school receives $7,000 for another first-year student and the now second-year student; in year three, the school receives $10,500 for another first-year student and the two other students. In the fourth year, the school receives a final payment of $14,000 for the four students in the program. After the fourth year, the institution is responsible for securing funding to continue the program.

Application Deadline
All applications must be received on or before November 2, 2009. Electronic submissions are not accepted. Receipt of entries cannot be acknowledged. All application materials must be received as one packet.

Eligibility
Deans from U.S. and Canadian dental schools are eligible to apply for this scholarship program on behalf of their institutions. A dean must have a commitment from faculty researchers to serve as mentors and supervise student research.

Application Process Checklist
Submit the following on or before November 2, 2009:

A detailed letter from the dean that outlines:

  • The completed application form
  • The scope of research activities in which a student could participate at the institution
  • Names of faculty members who will serve as mentors and a brief review of their research projects or activities, along with names of students who might participate
  • A proposal for how the institution plans to secure funding to continue the program

The institution receiving the ADEA/William J. Gies Dental Research Scholarship is expected to submit a written report describing outcomes from the scholarship by July 1 of each year of the award.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Notification Date and Award Announcement
Scholarship recipients will be notified on or before January 15, 2010. Awards will be presented at a ceremony during the 2010 ADEA Annual Session in Washington, DC, February 27 – March 3.
