Applications for 2012 will be accepted beginning in October 2011, with an application deadline of December 14, 2011, and notification of selection in January 2012. The following criteria and expectations for selection of dental and allied dental students and faculty mentors for ADCFP were developed by the Steering Committee.
Student Fellow Selection Factors
1. Will be a dental student or allied dental student during the fellowship year.
2. Submits all application materials, including letters of support, by announced deadlines.
3. Is in good academic standing, as verified by submission of a dental school transcript and a support letter from the Dean or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs that describes the Fellow’s academic standing and notable educational achievements.
4. In collaboration with the faculty member who will serve as the Fellow’s Mentor, submits an ADCFP proposal that:
- Describes the student’s career goals and aspirations
- Discusses reasons for applying to be an ADCFP Fellow
- Identifies three to five specific Fellowship goals
- Identifies tangible outcome measures to assess attainment of each Fellowship goal
5. Submits an ADCFP Mentoring Relationship Agreement, co-signed by the Fellow candidate and the designated Faculty Mentor.
6. Is available for the following Fellowship activities:
- ADCFP Fellow/Mentor Training Sessions at the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition
- Four webinar training sessions
- Meeting at least twice monthly with Mentor to discuss fellowship goals, plan for activities, and assess progress
- Conducting an educational research project, or other type of research, during the fellowship year in conjunction with Mentor
- Serving as an instructor for other dental students during the fellowship year in four educational settings: classroom, small group conference, preclinical laboratory course, and dental school clinic
- Attending the 2013 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition and presenting a poster related to the ADCFP experience
- A one-hour focus group and seminar at the 2013 ADEA Annual Session to provide feedback and recommendations concerning the ADCFP Fellowship
- 30-minute mid-year and end-of-Fellowship phone interviews
- A mid-year and end of Fellowship online surveys evaluating the program
Faculty Mentor Selection Factors
1. On a tenure track or already tenured
2. Submits proposal in concert with the Fellow’s application (i.e., student and mentor applications are coordinated)
3. Submits a proposal that:
- Describes reasons why he/she desires to serve as an ADCFP Mentor
- Describes the student’s dental school accomplishments and career goals (demonstrates knowledge of the student’s performance and aspirations)
4. Submits a current CV
5. Submits an ADCFP Mentoring Relationship Agreement, co-signed by the Fellow candidate and the designated faculty Mentor
6. Is available for the following Fellowship activities:
- Attend ADCFP Fellow/Mentor Training Session workshop at the 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition
- Participate in four webinar training sessions
- Meet at least twice monthly with the Fellow to discuss Fellowship goals, plan for activities, and assess progress
- Conduct an educational research project, or other type of research, during the Fellowship Year in conjunction with the Fellow
- Attending the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition
- A one-hour focus group and seminar at the 2012 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition to provide feedback and recommendations concerning the ADCFP Fellowship
- A 30-minute mid-year and end-of-Fellowship phone interview
- Online surveys to evaluate the program mid-year and end of Fellowship
Institutional Requirements
The Dean or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the candidate’s school submits a letter of support to the Chair of the ADCFP Selection Committee that includes:
- Recommendation of the student and faculty mentor for participation in the ADCFP Fellowship
- Description of the student’s academic standing and notable educational achievements, accompanied by a copy of the student’s dental school transcript
- Recognition of the time and activity requirements for the student and the faculty mentor during the ADCFP Fellowship and guarantee that the student and mentor will have protected time to complete all Fellowship activities
- Willingness to provide financial support and other school resources needed by the student to complete ADCFP Fellowship tasks
- Willingness to provide financial support and other school resources needed by the mentor to complete ADCFP Fellowship tasks
Additional Fellows and Mentors Supported Directly by the Dean
At the 52nd Annual ADEA Deans’ Conference, the Deans asked for and were granted the ability to sponsor ADEAGies/AADR ADCFP Fellows and Mentors in addition to the 10 supported through ADEA. The supporting amount is $2,500 per Fellow provided by the Dean.
