Women Liaison Officers in U.S. Dental Schools

The Women Liaisons Officers (WLO) program was instituted in 1992 to improve the academic environment for female faculty, staff and students. Major activities of WLOs include mentoring, networking and information exchange. They are also expected to serve as role models for female faculty and students. WLOs are appointed by their deans following the effective model that exists in medical schools throughout the United States. The WLO model as initiated in medicine, has contributed in a positive way to diversity activities in U.S. dental schools. Their major network instrument is their listserv which is managed by ADEA. The Women Liaison Officers Listserv has been in place since 1997.

The role of the WLO varies according to each of their individual institution’s needs. Current WLOs have given positive support to deans, especially as the numbers of women continue to
increase among the dental faculty and students. The WLO appointment is a non-paid assignment.

The WLOs have expanded their activities with a focus on Junior Faculty and have received support from the Council of Deans (COD), Minority Affairs Advisory Committee (MAAC) and
Women’s Affairs Advisory Committee (WAAC). The WLOs meet annually in an informal gathering at the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition to network, exchange information, and discuss issues of mutual interest and future program opportunities.

Goal Statement
To identify an individual who serves as a resource person on issues affecting women faculty colleagues in order to facilitate networking, information exchange, professional enhancement
opportunities, mentoring and related liaison activities for the purpose of advancing dental education. The Dean of the Dental School appoints this individual.

Functions and Responsibilities
The role of the Women Liaison Officer (WLO) will vary according to institutional needs and climate as well as the established roles already existing in the institution. In collaboration with the Dean, the WLO is encouraged to outline possible areas of activity and support mechanisms
for women colleagues in their institution. It is strongly suggested that the WLO be an experienced faculty member.
