DEADLINE AND METHOD FOR PROPOSING PROGRAMS
All program session proposals must be submitted online on or before Friday, July 11, 2008. Proposals for Poster Sessions and TechExpo Presentations must be submitted on or before Friday, September 26. If you have questions regarding this program proposal process, please contact Ms. Renee Latimer at 202-289-7201, ext. 185, or latimerr@adea.org.
Types of Proposals
There are a number of categories for proposals differing in delivery methods and learning environments. They are summarized below. Review complete rubrics used for the evaluation of all proposals.
Symposium
A symposium specifically addresses a topic relevant to the theme of the Annual Session. Program proposals for sessions that are provocative, grounded in well-reasoned thinking and experience, and are interactive are more likely to be accepted. Symposium length: 2 hours.
Faculty Development Workshop (FDW)
An FDW provides an active learning environment to enhance the scholarship of teaching and learning, investigate new strategies for professional development, explore change and innovation, develop new curricular strategies, or develop collaborative research models. Programs of high interactivity with well-orchestrated outlines for meeting learning objectives are more likely to be accepted. FDW length: 3 hours.
Lunch & Learn (L&L)
An L&L is an informal lunch discussion of up to nine people on critical issues facing the dental education community. The program proposal will be more likely to be accepted if it demonstrates that a lively, interactive, group conversation is the outcome. Each L&L will be offered twice, and there is no audiovisual component. L&L length: 1 hour.
Council, Section, Special Interest Group, or Community of Interest Program
A program presented by an ADEA disciplinary or interest group will be more likely to be accepted if it builds on programming presented by the group during the year or if it is developed by several groups working together. Program length: 90 minutes.
TechExpo Presentation
A TechExpo Presentation demonstrates computer-based technology applications used to support dental education, including enhancing educational and patient care programs and services.
Idea Session
An Idea Session allows a presenter to explore a newly-formed idea or briefly describe a program or technique that works. The Idea Session is designed to pique participants’ interest and introduce new ideas or best practices. Idea Session length: 25 minutes.
Poster Presentation and Student Poster Presentations
Presented during exhibition hours, Poster Presentations provide members the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest in three categories:
New Programs
Educational Research
Works in Progress (please note that Works in Progress are not published in the Journal of Dental Education)
A poster proposer may be the primary proposer of, at most, two poster abstracts. A special competition is also held for Student Poster Presentations.
Factors Affecting Selection
The ADEA Annual Session brings together those who work in diverse roles in dental education. So, the ADEA Annual Session Planning Committee seeks a wide variety in (a) topics proposed, (b) approaches used, (c) level of expertise of proposer(s), (d) interests covered, (e) professional and geographic distribution of proposer(s), and (f) relevance of the proposal to the needs of dental education and the Annual Session’s theme, Imagine.
Proposals are initially blindly reviewed and evaluated for:
a) content and relevance
b) clarity
c) format style
d) professional writing
e) contribution to the overall educational program
Reviewers also assess the past success of similar presentations, the number of other submissions for the same topic, and the need to balance Annual Session programming.
