Register for the DAT
Register to take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) or Canadian Dental Aptitude Test. You do not have to delay submitting an application until you have taken the DAT; however, most dental schools will not consider your application complete until they have received your DAT scores
Personal Statement
In the ADEA AADSAS application, you must provide a personal statement (4,500 characters, including spaces). You may want to start organizing your thoughts about why you are seeking a dental education.
Develop a Resume of Activities and Accomplishments
Begin compiling a resume of activities and accomplishments as a college student and beyond. The ADEA AADSAS application asks you to provide information about:
- Scholastic awards and honors earned
- Job shadowing and volunteer experiences in dentistry
- Extracurricular activities and leadership positions
- Volunteer and community service activities
- Work experience
- Research experience
- Activities requiring manual dexterity
Transcripts
Make a list of all colleges and universities attended. After the 2010 ADEA AADSAS application becomes available, you will be asked to submit an official transcript from every college and university atended. Even if you transferred from one college to another, and your academic credit is posted to a most reently attended college's transcript, you must still provide a transcript from the college where the credit was earned.
Be sure to print a Transcript Matching Form - located inside the AADSAS application - to every transcript request. This form is bar-coded and assures that your transcripts are correctly matched to your AADSAS application.
Letters of Evaluation
Identify individuals to write Letters of Evaluation (also called Letters of Recommendation) on your behalf. Does your college or university have a predental committee that evaluates applicants? If so, determine its timetable and process. The number and types of evaluations required vary among the dental schools. You can submit up to 4 Letters of Evaluation - or one Predental Committee Report plus one additional Letter of Evaluation to AADSAS. Check dental school websites and information in the Dental School Designations section of the ADEA AADSAS application for school-specific requirements. ADEA AADSAS will begin accepting letters of evaluation on June 1, 2009.
AADSAS Fees
ADEA AADSAS Processing Timeline
Your application is considered complete and ready to process when ADEA AADSAS has received:
- Your submitted online ADEA AADSAS application
- Official transcripts from every college and university attended
- ADEA AADSAS processing fee
After receipt of all items listed above, it takes ADEA AADSAS four to eight weeks to process and forward your dental school application to the designated dental schools. ADEA AADSAS begins sending applications to the dental schools in late June 2009.
Tips for a Timely and Successful Application Submission
- Apply early! Although the ADEA AADSAS application cycle is June 1 – February 1, do not wait until deadlines approach to submit your application. Each dental school has its own application deadline, and ADEA AADSAS does not send your application to a school if your application is received by ADEA AADSAS after the school’s deadline.
- Remember to submit an official transcript from all colleges and universities attended. Even if coursework from a previous college(s) attended is posted on your most recent transcript, you also must forward the official transcript for the previous school(s) to ADEA AADSAS. ADEA AADSAS must have an official transcript – sent directly from the Registrar’s Office – from each college listed in your application. Be sure to print a Transcript Matching Form (located inside the AADSAS application) to each transcript request.
- Enter your coursework carefully and accurately. The Coursework section of the ADEA AADSAS application requires that you list every single course you have taken in college, including grades and credit hours. This information is verified by ADEA AADSAS and is used to compute your GPAs. Failure to enter this information accurately can result in application processing delays.
- Remember to e-submit your application after you have completed it!
Fee Reduction Program
ADEA AADSAS offers a Fee Reduction Program (FRP) to applicants demonstrating extreme financial need. Individuals who qualify may receive a refund of paid application fees. Refer to instructions and FAQs inside the ADEA AADSAS 2010 application for details.
