Community-Based Dental Education Comes of Age

Twenty-five years since its inception, community-based education (CBE) is coming of age. At a growing number of academic dental institutions, CBE is demonstrating its ability to reduce the cost of educating students, improve the quality of their clinical experiences, and make a substantial contribution to improving access to care for surrounding communities. At the University of Colorado Denver and Harvard School of Dental Medicine—two of CBE’s early adopters—senior dental students currently spend about half the year doing rotations in community clinics and private practices.
