About ADEA’s Division of Member Services
The ADEA Division of Member Services, which includes publications, membership, professional development, and marketing, was created in 2005 to better serve the needs of members and position ADEA as “The Voice of Dental Education.” This division was organized to:

inform and engage faculty, administrators, and students in the opportunities and challenges facing our profession;

expand participation by members and others in ADEA’s scholarship, networking, and leadership opportunities;

and engage the entire dental education community in advancing the mission of ADEA.

The division accomplishes these goals in several ways, including:

managing membership data and responding to member needs; recruiting and retaining members;
producing publications in print and on the World Wide Web;
marketing ADEA and promoting good relations with the media; and planning and implementing extended learning opportunities that meet the personal and professional development of ADEA’s constituency.

Membership
Membership in ADEA offers exceptional opportunities for personal and professional growth and development.

Open Membership. On January 2, 2006, ADEA transformed itself by moving to Open Membership. Under Open Membership any faculty member, staff member, or student of an ADEA Institutional Member could join ADEA as an Individual Member without charge. Open Membership will be reviewed by the ADEA Board of Directors in January 2009. ADEA Institutional Members are encouraged to invite their students, faculty, and staff to join ADEA, especially at the start of every school year.

Here is a look at ADEA membership over the past 30 years, through July 6, 2006, when the figure of 30,013 was collected. About 12,600 of that number are as a result of Open Membership. (Remember, ADEA has Individual Members from nonmember programs. They still pay the $125 annual membership dues [$40 for students].)

The ADEA Division of Member Services is anxious to provide first class member service and welcomes suggestions and questions from volunteer leaders of ADEA.

Activating Individual Membership. Some of the most effective advocates for ADEA membership are ADEA’s volunteer leaders. Their connections and influence in their programs and institutions help attract new members—both Institutional and Individual—all the time. The simplest way to activate an ADEA Individual Membership is through the ADEA website, www.adea.org. As one of many benefits, a member will have access to the Journal of Dental Education (JDE) Online and also the Bulletin of Dental Education (BDE), which became an online-only newsletter in January 2006. Members will also have access to other “members only” items at no cost or at deeply discounted rates. Of course, members will receive special pricing for attendance at the ADEA Annual Session. Members who wish to continue to receive the JDE in print pay only $70 for a one-year subscription.

Initiating Institutional Membership. The Bylaws contain a comprehensive listing of ways to become an Institutional Member. The applicant program completes an application, which is sent to Member Services in care of Susan Krug. The application is reviewed and, if approved, membership begins.

Publications and Electronic Media
Of critical importance is ADEA’s role in publishing scholarly journal articles through the Journal of Dental Education (JDE) and membership news and events through the Bulletin of Dental Education Online (BDE). ADEA’s strategic allies beyond the membership are informed through media releases and other publications of significant issues affecting dental and allied dental education as they relate to higher education and the health of the public.

Monographs, booklets, ADEA Annual Session and other meeting materials, and much of the content on the website are generated and produced in this division. All classified advertising for the JDE, the BDE, and the ADEA website is coordinated in Member Services.

Journal of Dental Education (JDE)
The JDE is a distinguished monthly journal published by ADEA since 1936. It provides coverage of the wide variety of scientific and educational research involved in dental and allied dental education. Widely recognized, it is the premier publication for academic dentistry, covering topics ranging from the impact on oral health research of recent findings in such areas as genetics and the brain, innovative testing methodologies, curriculum reform, and systematic reviews of clinical trials regarding oral, dental, and craniofacial diseases and disorders. The JDE is one of only a few scholarly journals publishing the most important work being done in dental and allied dental education and research today.

Sections of the journal are:

Critical Issues in Dental Education
Transfer of Advances in Sciences into Dental Education
Faculty Development
Educational Methodologies
Evidence-Based Dentistry
Milieu in Dental Schools and Practice
From the Students’ Corner
International Perspectives
Plus Association Reports, book and software reviews, occasional editorials, and letters to the editor.
The July issue of the JDE features the proceedings of the ADEA Annual Session, a series of exhibits, including the Bylaws, and an index of the year’s ADEA House of Delegates resolutions. This issue is a valuable reference for familiarizing new officers and committee members with the Association and for locating answers to questions and policy matters.

Members who want to receive the journal in print pay $70 per year for a subscription. Subscriptions for U.S. nonmembers are $140 per year, $165 per year for Canadians, and $190 per year for foreign subscribers. Subscribers may also access the journal online at www.jdentaled.org.

Journal of Dental Education Editorial Review Board
JDE Editorial Review Board members are appointed by the editor and serve three-year terms with one renewal possible. Members are chosen for their expertise in particular topics pertinent to dental education and educational research, as well as for their experience in research, publication, and educational policy. Board members advise the editor on issues related to review criteria and procedures, standards for acceptance, and other journal policy. In most instances, submitted manuscripts are reviewed by at least one board member in addition to any other reviewers. Current Editorial Review Board members and the year their terms expire are:

Dr. Linda Behar-Horenstein (2011)
Dr. Robert Cederberg (2011)
Dr. John W. Killip (2011)
Prof. Marie A. Collins (2012)
Dr. Paul C. Edwards (2012)
Dr. Michelle Henshaw (2012)
Dr. Marcia M. Ditmyer (2013)
Dr. Ali Fakhry (2013)
Dr. Daniel L. Orr (2013)

Bulletin of Dental Education Online (BDE)
This lively newsletter, which became an online publication on January 1, 2006, highlights activities and events taking place in Member Institutions and among individuals. Informative announcements, articles, profiles, and columns report on innovations and opportunities in dental education, pertinent federal legislation and regulations, awards and competitions, grant and funding opportunities, student activities, and individual and institutional members. Announcements, brief articles, statistical trends in dental education, and an extensive classified section are also found in the BDE. Subscriptions for the online version are $18 a year for nonmembers.
