About the ADEA Center for Public Policy and Advocacy
The
ADEA Center for Public Policy and Advocacy (ADEA CPPA) is a collaborative partner in ADEA’s Institute for Public Policy and Advocacy with the Centers for
Equity and Diversity and
Educational Policy and Research. ADEA CPPA focuses on legislative priorities approved annually by the
ADEA Board of Directors. Of critical importance in its advocacy efforts are the following categories of public policy issues:
National Oral Health Advocacy Committee (NOHAC)
The Boards of Directors of ADEA and the American Association for Dental Research (AADR) established the National Oral Health Advocacy Committee (NOHAC) in May 2005. The Committee’s primary purpose is to increase and enhance the efficacy of advocacy efforts on behalf of dental education and research.
National Advocacy Network (NAN)
The NAN is the vehicle or infrastructure through which AADR-ADEA, the deans, and volunteer advocacy coordinators will carry out our joint advocacy and mobilize members to take legislative action. The network will be utilized to educate legislators and the public on a variety of legislative initiatives affecting oral health, dental education, and dental research. Volunteer Advocacy Coordinators and Field Advocacy Training are the foundation from which the network will be built. The goal is to create a cadre of ambassadors who are knowledgeable and articulate on the issues and provide one unified, consistent voice for dental education and research. If you are interested in being a part of the NAN, please contact Monette McKinnon.
Fellowship
The ADEA Center for Public Policy and Advocacy administers the ADEA/Sunstar Americas, Inc./ Harry W. Bruce, Jr. Legislative Fellowship Program. This program, sponsored by the generous support of Sunstar Americas, Inc., provides one dental school representative each year with in-depth training in the federal legislative process and increased understanding of policy issues related to dental education and research in Washington, DC. Bruce Fellows form a cadre of dental faculty and administrators who work effectively with federal and state legislators. Fellows serve for one year and spend three months in Washington. They receive a stipend from Sunstar Americas, Inc. Full-time dental school faculty members who are members of ADEA are eligible to apply. The in-residence portion of the fellowship must be scheduled when Congress is in session.
ADEA Legislative Workshops and Advocacy Days
CPPA hosts Advocacy Days on Capitol Hill annually and co-hosts National Dental Student Lobby Day with the American Student Dental Association (ASDA). Advocacy Days are preceded by legislative workshops in which nationally recognized speakers make presentations on public policy issues of interest to dental educators and researchers and to the practice of the dental profession; participants become knowledgeable in issues on which they will advocate with Members of Congress; and CPPA staff conducts tutorials on ways to advocate effectively.
Field Advocacy Workshops
Field Advocacy Workshops provide education with regard to understanding federal legislative issues and building practical advocacy skills. Field advocacy workshops help to increase participation in advocacy among faculty, administrators, and students. The workshops cultivate the skills needed to allow members to respond quickly and effectively to our advocacy needs. Any dean may invite CPPA to give a workshop at a dental school by contacting Jack Bresch.
