Nadeem Karimbux, D.M.D., M.M.Sc., Named as Associate Editor of MedEdPORTAL Representing ADEA

WASHINGTON, DC—The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) has named Nadeem Karimbux, D.M.D., M.M.Sc., Associate Editor of the MedEdPORTAL representing ADEA. Dr. Karimbux is Assistant Dean of Dental Education and Associate Professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). He has over 12 years experience as an editor for medical and dental journals, and is nationally recognized for his innovative work with the Problem-Based Learning curriculum at HSDM.

“Dr. Karimbux is a renowned educator and researcher uniquely situated to offer an interdisciplinary perspective throughout the review process. ADEA is pleased to have a scholar like Dr. Karimbux involved with MedEdPORTAL,” said ADEA President Charles N. Bertolami, D.D.S., D.Med.Sc.

Dr. Karimbux has been a peer reviewer for several journals, including the Journal of Dental Education (JDE), the Journal of Dental Research (JDR), the Archives of Oral Biology, and the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). He has also held several editorial, associate editorial, and editorial board positions with the American/International Association of Dental Research (AADR/IADR), the International Journal of Contemporary Medicine, the JDE, and the Journal of Periodontology (JOP). At HSDM Dr. Karimbux is Director of the Predoctoral Curriculum, Faculty Development, and Oral Comprehensive Exams and chairs a number of key dental school committees, including the Committee on Promotions and Exams, the Subcommittee on Courses and Credits, and the Information Systems Committee

“I am very excited to be the ADEA Associate Editor for MedEdPORTAL. ADEA and several of its members have been promoting the ADEA Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ADEA SoTL) community to elevate the status of teaching in environments where academic promotion is most typically based on research activities. The ability for faculty to submit and publish teaching materials to a peer-reviewed site will provide a metric that can be used for promotion. I look forward to working with ADEA, AAMC, and dental faculty across the world to facilitate the publication of curriculum materials,” said Dr. Karimbux.

Dr. Karimbux has been a member of ADEA since 1996 and currently serves as Chair of the ADEA Council of Faculties. He is also a member of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Karimbux holds a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree and a master’s of medical science in oral biology with a certificate in periodontology from HSDM.

MedEdPORTAL is a collection of high-quality, peer-reviewed educational resources submitted by medical and dental educators. This year, ADEA and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) formed a partnership that allowed the AAMC to expand its unique MedEdPORTAL teaching tools repository to include dental education resources. The collaboration represents the first time academic medicine and dentistry have come together to share teaching resources across universities and throughout the world.
