2013 ADEA BFACA Mid Year Meeting
The BFACA Meeting is an alliance of members of two ADEA sections who meet annually, the ADEA Sections on Business and Financial Administration and on Clinic Administration. This meeting offers attendees the opportunity to collectively share knowledge and learn from one another, with the goal of improving business and clinical operations at their dental institutions.
2013 Program Highlights
Many dental schools are viewing themselves as if they are corporations and applying management techniques such as value streaming and lean process improvement. This shift in view is new to most dental educators and is resulting in major changes requiring “buy in” from this traditional work force. Change is inevitable, and today’s educators must embrace rapid change in areas such as technology, the economy, and student and patient demographics. To remain on the forefront of dental education, schools are committed to making difficult changes in their academic cultures to re-envision what it means to provide a contemporary education for the dentist of the future.

Thursday, October 10: EXPRESS-ions!
In the spirit of following the theme of Embracing Change, the 2013 Mid Year Meeting introduced a new way to experience learning and sharing in the ADEA BFACA community with EXPRESS-ions! Borrowing from the Pecha-Kucha presentation style, this session consisted of nine five-minute presentations on hot topics in dental education as related to business and financial, and clinic administration. The presenters shared experiences from their home institutions and lessons learned in embracing the changes that have taken place and explained how attendees could apply them at their home institutions. At the conclusion of all presentations, attendees engaged in two rounds of robust small group discussions on the topics of their choice led by the EXPRESS-ions! presenter.
