2012 ADEA Fall Meetings

Joint Sessions—Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

Higher education-and specifically health professions education-struggles to find effective ways to gather people from diverse backgrounds in an environment of optimal learning and success. Most higher education institutions are committed to educating a diverse student body; yet, they face challenges creating inclusive environments—with high levels of cultural flexibility—for students, faculty, and staff.

At the ADEA 2012 Fall Meetings, collective opportunities—in addition to each ADEA Council meeting with its own agenda—enabled attendees to gain insights into issues affecting dental education at all levels. Attendees learned about and discussed the key elements of "creating institutional climates and cultures" that are both diverse and inclusive.

The ADEA 2012 Fall Meetings provided a series of lectures and conversations, a provocative keynote address, a two-hour plenary with small group discussion, and a town hall meeting that helped attendees find common ground, despite their different professional roles.
