H. Philip (Phil) Pierpont, D.D.S.
Dr. Pierpont graduated from the University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston (UTSD) in 1977 and received a Certificate in Fixed Prosthodontics from UTSD in 1982. He has been on the faculty at UTSD for over 35 years and has served as Department Chair, Clinical Practice Leader, Director of Advanced Education and, since 1987, as Associate Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs. Dr. Pierpont has over 30 years’ experience in dental school admissions. He is an active member of ADEA, currently serving as Councilor of the Section on Student Affairs and Financial Aid.
Howard University College of Dentistry
Ms. Perry is a fourth-year dental student at Howard University College of Dentistry. Initially focused on medicine, after two years of undergraduate work and participation in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Summer Medical and Dental Education Program, she shifted to dentistry. As a dental student she has volunteered with the Indian Health Service and local organizations, and participated in a service mission to Cameroon. She is conducting research on the longevity of Glass Ionomer and Composite Sealants in a joint project between the National Institutes of Standards and Technology and Howard University. Ms. Perry is currently the Vice-Chair of the ADEA Council of Students, Residents and Fellows.
Tips for a Successful Application
Ms. Cacas is the Director of Admissions at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (Penn Dental Medicine). She has held her current position since 1995, reviewing more than 27,000 dental school applications. Previously she served as Director of Student Affairs at Penn Dental Medicine. Ms. Cacas has held various leadership positions within the ADEA Section on Dental School Admissions Officers, including Chair. She served on the ADEA AADSAS Application Task Force from 1995–2000 and is currently a member of the ADEA AADSAS WebAdmit Task Force and ADEA CAAPID Application Task Force for the foreign-trained dentist application service.
Ms. Candito is Director of Admissions and Associate Dean of Student Services for the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry (Pacific Dugoni). She is responsible for strategic direction of and leadership for D.D.S. and post-graduate admissions, financial aid, housing and student health. This includes recruitment, advising and predental programs and initiatives, and student social and fraternal group activities. During her 22 years with student services, Pacific Dugoni’s incoming classes have consistently ranked among the top in the nation for academic average. Additionally, Pacific Dugoni has seen a continual increase in applications and enrollment of underrepresented minorities and women.
Stephanie Perry, M.Ed.
Ms. Perry is Director of Student Admissions at Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine (GRU CDM). She joined GRU CDM (then the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry) in 2001 as the dental school minority recruiter. She was instrumental in developing and maintaining several pipeline programs for prospective dental students in Georgia. While working in this capacity she earned an M.Ed. and assumed her current role. She travels throughout Georgia and surrounding states to inform high school, college and university students about the dental profession. She has served on numerous committees, including the GRU CDM’s admission committee.
Barbara H. Miller, D.D.S.
Dr. Miller is the Executive Director of Recruitment and Admissions for the Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry (TAMBCD). She received her D.D.S. degree from TAMBCD and practiced general dentistry before returning to TAMBCD to teach preclinical and clinical courses. Currently she teaches cultural competency and ethics courses to dental and dental hygiene students. Over the last eight years she has focused on recruitment and admissions. She is the Chair of the D.D.S. Admissions Committee, directs the recruitment efforts of the college for the D.D.S. program and supports the college’s efforts in cultural competency, diversity, access, equity and inclusion.
Eugenia E. Mejia, Ph.D.
Dr. Mejia is Senior Director of Admissions at New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD). She is responsible for recruitment and enrollment of more than 400 students yearly for the D.D.S., master’s and postgraduate programs. Her department focuses on recruiting a diverse class and working with student groups to mentor prospective students. She is a member of the ADEA AADSAS, CAAPID and PASS Task Forces, the National Association of Minority Medical Educators and the Association of Hispanic Mental Health Professionals. She worked for 22 years in the NYU Opportunity Program advocating, mentoring and developing programs to increase the number of underrepresented students in health and licensed professions.

Henryne Green Tobias, Ed.M.
Henryne is the Project Director for Explorehealthcareers.org, a free, peer-reviewed, multidisciplinary website designed to educate and inform students, advisors and parents about the vast array of career options in the health professions. EHC's mission is to address the underrepresentation of low-income and minority groups in the U.S. health care workforce and to encourage health professionals to practice and provide care in medically underserved communities. ExploreHealthCareers is administered by the American Dental Education Association.
Bridgette Hudson, M.P.A.
Specialist, Communications and Alumni Initiatives, Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP)
Ms. Hudson is the Specialist for Communications and Alumni Initiatives for the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at the Association of American Medical Colleges. She is responsible for the communications, social media and alumni engagement activities of the SMDEP Program as well as recruitment and development of partner relationships. Ms. Hudson holds both a B.A. in Political Science and a Master’s in Public Affairs from the University of Connecticut.

Tips to take the Dental Admissions Test
Kathleen J. Hinshaw, L.D.H., Ed.D.
Dr. Hinshaw is Senior Manager, Test Administration at the American Dental Association. She oversees the national administration of the Dental Admission Test (DAT), the National Board Dental Examinations (NBDE: Part I and Part II), the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) and the Optometry Admission Test (OAT). She manages a staff who provide examination services for the testing programs, fielding over 70,000 calls and 15,000 pieces of correspondence annually. Dr. Hinshaw is a licensed dental hygienist and a former dental hygiene program director with over 30 years of experience in academia. She has an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership.
