Oral Health Literacy

Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research

The most recent National Assessment of Adult Literacy found that 36% of American adults lack sufficient health literacy skills to perform common tasks, such as using a prescription drug label to time medication in relationship to meals or using a height and weight graph to determine a healthy weight range. The implications of these findings are nothing short of alarming, and they speak to the urgent need to train health professions students in how to communicate more effectively with their patients.

In this issue of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger, we visit with colleagues on the frontlines of the battle to improve oral health literacy. In our Guest Perspective, Dr. Dushanka V. Kleinman, former Chief Dental Officer of the U.S. Public Health Service, reflects on her own growing appreciation of health literacy as an essential strategy for health improvement. We also visit with some of her colleagues at the University of Maryland, where faculty at the schools of public health and dentistry are contributing to efforts to assess and improve the oral health literacy of state residents. Finally, we meet Dr. Jessica Y. Lee at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and learn about her research into the oral health literacy of those who care for young children and its impact on those children's oral health.
