Team-Based Learning™

Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research

It has been more than three decades since a business professor first began developing the systematic approach to engaging students that is known as Team-Based Learning™ (TBL). This active learning strategy has gained a foothold at several dozen medical, nursing, pharmacy, veterinary, and allied health professions schools in recent years, strongly suggesting that it may prove valuable in dental education as well.

In this edition of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger, we hear from Dr. Dean Parmelee, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University, who is championing the use of TBL in health professions schools. We also travel to New Orleans to visit one of the institutions employing this strategy, Tulane University School of Medicine. Finally, we head north to learn how TBL was introduced into the curriculum at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine by Dr. Frank A. Scannapieco.

As always you will find links to JDE articles and to the sites and documents mentioned in this edition’s stories under Resources. We hope you will visit these to explore the potential of TBL to enrich and enhance your school’s curriculum.
