Curricular Innovation in Allied Dental Education
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research

In one of our first issues of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger, we profiled the use of assessment portfolios in allied dental education. It has been quite a while since then, so we decided to check in with our colleagues at allied dental programs to ask what curricular innovations are currently taking place. We found a range of exciting initiatives, two of which we showcase in this issue.

First, we turn our Educator Spotlight on Jacquelyn L. Fried, Associate Professor and Director of the University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery’s Division of Dental Hygiene. Jackie has pioneered two distance-learning programs that are expanding her division’s reach. In our Campus Spotlight you will learn about a community-based education program at Foothill College that is improving students’ skills while sensitizing them to the needs of underserved members of the community. Finally, in our Guest Perspective, Tami Grzesikowski, Dean of the College of Health Sciences at
St. Petersburg College in Florida, shares her own experience developing a new degree-completion program and reflects on the ferment in allied dental education that she is witnessing through her involvement with the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI).

As always, you will find links to JDE articles and to the sites and documents mentioned in this edition’s stories under Resources. We hope you will use these to explore ideas and models that might be appropriate for your campus.

Recent Accomplishments
Many ADEA CCI Liaisons were among those gathered at the 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Diego, California, earlier this month. The ADEA CCI Open Session featured Dr. Mildred Garcia, President of California State University, Dominguez Hills, speaking on visionary leadership. A champion of access and diversity, Garcia insisted that we all have the capacity to be visionary, but some of us just dream while others lead. Her vision transported her from a New York City housing project to become the first person in her family to attend college. In her current position as the first Latina president in the California State University system, she is driven to provide the same opportunity to other young people. She offered 10 inspiring lessons for would-be visionary leaders. A summary of these can be found in a description of her talk in the April Bulletin of Dental Education Online.

The ADEA CCI Liaisons Meeting that followed addressed ways in which faculty can engage deans in supporting change and innovation efforts at their schools. Dr. Lex MacNeil, Dean of the College of Medicine and Dentistry at Midwestern University - Illinois, and Dr. Nader A. Nadershahi, Executive Associate Dean and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at theUniversity of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, shared their experience as leaders on two innovative campuses.
