Fall 2010: Students as Agents of Change

Students as Agents of Change
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research

If anyone still thinks of students as passive recipients of their educational experience, this issue of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger should dispel that notion. As change and innovation become the norm at more and more of our institutions, students are taking the initiative to bring about the changes they desire. They have begun adding content to curricula, transforming its delivery, and facilitating student engagement in significant ways.

In this issue you will meet seven such students from campuses across the country, and we will visit the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, which has been especially successful in engaging students in innovation. In our Guest Perspective, David A. Simhaee, MBT, President of the ADEA Council of Students, Residents, and Fellows, shares his experiences as a student at Columbia University and his thoughts on why the current dental school climate is so conducive to student involvement in innovation.

As always, you will find links to JDE articles and the sites and documents mentioned in this edition’s stories under Resources. We hope you will use these to explore new ways in which to involve students as change agents on your campus.
