  • Diversity in All Its Dimensions
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Associate Executive Director and Director, ADEA Center for Educational Policy and Research

In 2008, ADEA convened leading educators to review how diversity is addressed in pre-dental accreditation standards and to recommend revisions.  These addressed the representation of minorities in the student body, cultural competency education, and the impact of diversity on the academic climate. All the recommendations were accepted by the Commission on Dental Accreditation last year and are currently out for review.

In keeping with these developments, this edition of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger looks at diversity in all its dimensions: some overt, some subtle, others hidden from view.  We visit Baylor College of Dentistry, whose pipeline programs and admissions policies have produced an extraordinarily diverse campus.  We meet Dr. Frederick G. More whose cultural competency course is prompting dialog around diversity issues at New York University (NYU).  And in our Guest Perspective Dr. Andrew I. Spielman, also of NYU, looks at the admissions process.  He suggests we can diversify our student bodies by looking beyond traditional academic metrics and considering qualities that may better predict success as a dental practitioner.

Links to JDE articles and to the sites mentioned in this edition’s stories are available under Resources. We hope you will use these to explore ways in which to enhance your institution’s pipeline programs, admissions policies, and cultural competency courses.
