The median annual wage for a dental laboratory technician was $34,170 in May 2008, according to the latest BLS data. Job growth in the field is projected to increase faster than average over the next ten years, largely because the population is aging. Older people are more likely to require the dental products produced by dental lab techs.

Other interesting notes:

  • In 2008, there were 20 programs in dental laboratory technology accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation in conjunction with the American Dental Association.
  • There are approximately 46,000 dental laboratory technicians working today.
  • Another 6,400 technicians will be needed by 2018 to meet demand.
