Why Dentistry?

My mother is a dentist, so I’ve always been exposed to dentistry in the clinical setting. She never pushed the profession but mentioned she thought I had the right chair side manner and hand skills. I was initially interested in medicine, but after completing an internship, I realized it wasn’t for me. To see if dentistry would be a good path to take, I was part of a pipeline program the summer of my freshman year at the University of Michigan (UM). It was a six-week program that allowed me to see dentistry from the educational side. It was very eye opening. I saw all the possibilities the profession offered and the opportunity to be a role model. I also found through the program that I have an affinity for working directly with patients who are disadvantaged.

What are your short-term and long-term goals?

I’m focusing on academic excellence right now and building my confidence with procedures in the clinic. I want to continue to work with my faculty mentors, maintain participation and contribute to the student groups I belong to. I currently serve as ADEA Vice President for Students, Residents, and Fellows, and I am also a member of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and the Student National Dental Association (SNDA). I want to grow and understand the profession as much as possible. I’m trying to not be too rigid as far as my long-term plans go. I don’t want to just practice dentistry. I want to work on policy issues and recruit underrepresented minority students and students who are passionate about contributing to the oral health of the public.

Advice to applicants and first-year students?

Think outside the box. I didn’t get here by myself. Don’t be intimidated by people in higher positions and seek out the help of mentors to guide you. Apply early and get your letters of recommendation lined up early. Personally follow up with the schools you really want to attend, and make sure the school fits you.
