Awards and Fellowships Funded

ADEA/William J. Gies Educational Fellowship

A stipend of up to $15,000 will be awarded in 2017 for a dental educator to pursue a cumulative two to three-month fellowship at the ADEA office in Washington, DC, researching educational issues facing dental education.

ADEA/ADEAGies Foundation Drs. Connie L. and Richard R. Drisko Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute 

A $10,000 scholarship will be awarded in 2017 to enable a dental educator to participate in the ADEA Leadership Institute

ADEA/ADEAGies Foundation Dr. Anthony R. Volpe Scholar in the ADEA Leadership Institute

A $25,000 scholarship will be awarded in 2017 to a mid-career dental school educator who has shown evidence of leadership potential for participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute. 

ADEA/AAL Faculty of Color Tuition Scholarships for Professional Development

The ADEA/AAL Faculty of Color Tuition Scholarships for Professional Development encourage and foster the development of faculty of color in academic dental careers. These scholarships will cover the cost of tuition for the ADEA Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders, the ADEA/AAL Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program, the ADEA/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning and the ADEA/AAL Compass Program for Academic Advancement, which take place during the summer and fall of 2017.

2017 Bell Leadership Institute Tuition Awards

The ADEAGies Foundation will fund tuition for three to four new dental school deans (three or fewer years in the position) to attend the Bell Leadership Institute's Achievers seminar and The Leader's Roundtable in 2017. This award is a result of a generous contribution from Rick and Angie Workman. 

William J. Gies Student Research Scholarship

The foundation continues to fund two multiyear grants, each totaling $35,000, to encourage and support dental student research at the predoctoral level. The programs currently receiving support are the dental schools at the University of California, San Francisco and University of Alabama. Past recipients include Columbia University School of Dental and Oral Surgery, the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, and the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry.

Editorial Awards Program

This funding to the American Association of Dental Editors & Journalists (AADEJ) provides $3,000 in awards for excellence in editorial writing in dentistry.

Periodontal and Oral Surgery Awards

These awards are $500 for an outstanding periodontal educator, in conjunction with the American Association of Periodontology, and $500 for an outstanding oral surgery educator, in conjunction with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Gies Lecture Series

The William J. Gies Lecture Series includes two lectures, one that occurs at the Greater New York Dental Meeting and another that takes place at the Chicago Dental Society meeting or another major meeting.
