Associate Dean, Finance and Planning

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine

The College of Dental Medicine at Columbia University seeks candidates with clinical financial management and planning experience to serve as the Associate Dean for Finance and Planning. Reporting to the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration, the Associate Dean is responsible for strategically planning, leading and managing the financial functions of the College of Dental Medicine (“CDM”). The Associate Dean will oversee the budgeting, financial reporting, finance and business operations of CDM in support of its teaching, patient care and research missions.  The Associate Dean will serve as a key member of the school’s senior management team, translating vision into action to advance the school’s initiatives, goals and strategies.

Columbia University is one of the most distinguished academic institutions in the world, with strengths in medicine, science, the arts, and the humanities. Overlooking the Hudson River, the College of Dental Medicine is located two miles north of the Morningside Heights campus of Columbia University. CDM, the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Mailman School of Public Health, the School of Nursing, and New York Presbyterian Hospital comprise the 20-acre campus of the Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

CDM is a school of highly complex operations with both DDS and graduate programs, teaching clinics, faculty practices, community and global activity, and research programs. With an annual budget of approximately $75 million, CDM enrolls over 400 students and employs more than 300 faculty and staff who provide world-class leadership in scientific research, dental education and patient care. Sponsored research activities generate roughly $6 million annually and the faculty practices generate roughly $10 million annually. The faculty practices and teaching clinic combine to serve over 30,000 patients through over 130,000 patient visits annually.

The Associate Dean for Finance and Planning is responsible for the effective oversight and management of the College’s budget and financial performance. S/he will also actively lead and manage, with other members of school leadership, the financial performance of CDM, including identification and implementation of revenue enhancement measures as well as, when necessary, cost reduction measures. CDM, led by a visionary Dean seeking to transform dental education, has ambitious growth and improvement goals; the Associate Dean will be a key partner in identifying and analyzing potential ways to reach these goals.

The Associate Dean will provide essential leadership to the College by creating budgeting models and forecasting trends in finance and financial operations, working towards long-term financial sustainability and diversification of the College’s funding base and revenue streams, in particular those related to the College’s clinical portfolio. The Associate Dean will ensure that there are appropriate preventive and detective controls, checks and balances, and effective monitoring systems across financial and business operations.

Qualified candidates for this position will possess a Master’s degree in business administration, accounting, or similar degree and a minimum of seven years of progressive responsibility at a managerial level, including clinical finance expertise.
