statement issued June 13 by the directors of the 70 National Cancer
Institute-designated cancer centers endorses gender-neutral HPV vaccination.
The HPV vaccination rate in the United States remains low, and significantly
lower than other recommended adolescent vaccination rates. Concerned over low
HPV vaccination rates, the American Academy of
Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) adopted a Policy
on Human Papilloma Virus Vaccinations in 2017. HPV is associated
with anogenital, skin and oral and oropharyngeal cancers. Providing counseling
to patients and parents about HPV’s link to oral cancers and the potential
benefits of the HPV vaccine are measures that are supported by the AAPD and
discussed in this policy.
