The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) initiated a new push in May to educate parents that they can enroll their children in Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) at any time during the year, and that parents themselves may also be eligible for Medicaid. Unlike many health insurance plans, there is no fixed, annual sign-up period for these government insurance programs.

CMS launched the new initiative as part of the Connecting Kids to Coverage National Campaign, which has developed a range of marketing tools, including print materials, social media graphics, posters, radio public service announcements and a video for the Web.

Children’s dental benefits have been included in Medicaid since 1989, have been mandatory in CHIP since its 2010 reauthorization, and are included as one of the 10 essential health benefits in the Affordable Care Act.
