Ethics and Professionalism
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, ADEA Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President

In this issue of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger, we hear from faculty, students and administrators who are engaged in promoting ethics and professionalism within dental education. In our Campus Spotlight, we visit the Ostrow School of Dentistry of the University of Southern California, birthplace of the Student Professionalism and Ethics Association in Dentistry (SPEA). In our Educator Spotlight, we talk with Dr. Lawrence Garetto, who has helped to shape an innovative ethics and professionalism curriculum at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. Finally we hear from Prof. Pamela Zarkowski, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Detroit Mercy. Her Guest Commentary explores the mixed messages that undermine best efforts to instill ethical and professional behaviors in students and discusses ways that schools can start to undo the damage caused by this “hidden curriculum.”

We would like to hear about the challenges your campus faces in incorporating ethics and professionalism into the curriculum. Please use the comment feature at the bottom of each blog post to continue the conversation with other ADEA CCI Liaisons.
