Creating Safe Space for LGBT and Students of Color in Schools of Dentistry: Training Allies

This Access, Diversity and Inclusion session focuses on how dental schools can foster an inclusive environment for LGBT students and students of color. Institutions have the opportunity to be intentional in how they impact such students. In this session, Mark Kamimura-Jimenez, Ph.D., of The KP Group, speaks about how institutions can be intentional about changing their cultures to become more inclusive environments.

All conference attendees, especially those in positions of leadership, are encouraged to attend. In the session attendees will revisit climate concerns for marginalized communities in schools of dentistry, discuss the importance of identifying and working with allies, identify why safe spaces are important and indicate what ally building and safe space means for the profession, students, professionals and patients.


The Supreme Court’s Ruling on Fisher v. University of Texas

In this Access, Diversity and Inclusion session, an expert will discuss the implications for dental education from the ruling on Fisher v. University of Texas. The U.S. Supreme Court issued a 7-1 ruling on Fisher v. University of Texas, a case concerning the affirmative action admissions policy of the University of Texas at Austin. The case asked that the court either declare the admissions policy of the University inconsistent with, or entirely overrule, Grutter v. Bollinger, a 2003 case in which the Supreme Court ruled that race could play a limited role in the admissions policies of universities. In the Fisher v. University of Texas ruling, the Supreme Court held that the lower court, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, was incorrect in upholding a lower court’s summary judgment because the lower court failed to apply “strict scrutiny” to the case. An expert will discuss the implications of this ruling on diversity, higher education and academic dentistry. Come to this session to hear how the ruling impacts future enrollment in dental education.
