For the past year, ADEA’s Educational Research and Analysis (ERA) portfolio facilitated a group of academic deans to revise the CODA Curriculum Survey. The academic deans recently met at American Dental Association (ADA) headquarters in Chicago as an extension of the broader work of the Liaison Committee on Surveys and Reports sponsored by the ADA, ADEA, the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations. The longstanding goal of the Liaison Committee is to update collection instruments, facilitate data sharing between and among the sponsors and provide more timely reports to member communities.
The revised CODA Curriculum Survey deliberately moves away from focusing on faculty instruction clock hours and instead focuses on providing data on the new CODA curricular standards, specifically the learning environment, professional competencies and foundational knowledge topics with an emphasis on student learning outcomes. The pilot survey launched on August 16, 2013 and was sent to 19 institutions. The results will be shared at the 2013 ADEA Fall Meetings, October 24–26, in Oklahoma City, OK.
The Curriculum Revision committee is chaired by Dr. William Knight, University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry, with the following committee members: Dr. Marilyn Lantz, University of Michigan School of Dentistry; Dr. Nader A. Nadershahi, University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry; Dr. Ellen Bryne, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry; Dr. Robert M Trombly, University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and Dr. Andrew I. Spielman, New York University College of Dentistry.
