Evidence-Based Dentistry, Part 1
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President, ADEA Policy Center
Beginning in 2013, the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standard 2-21 will require that our graduates “be competent to access, critically appraise, apply, and communicate scientific and lay literature as it relates to providing evidence-based patient care.” In our continued effort to help schools figure out how they will meet the new CODA standards, this issue of the ADEA CCI Liaison Ledger showcases several leaders in the area of evidence-based dentistry (EBD) and sheds light on how schools are teaching EBD skills to their predoctoral students.
Our colleagues at the New York University College of Dentistry began tackling EBD more than one decade ago and have developed a comprehensive program, as you will learn in our Campus Spotlight. At the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, Dr. John Rugh is doing related work, which we feature in this issue’s Educator Spotlight. Finally, in our Guest Perspective we hear from Dr. Richard Niederman, Director of the Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry at The Forsyth Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He discusses the challenges of implementing EBD in the academic and practice arenas, and urges readers to take action to make EBD a reality.
Our next issue will look at engaging dentists in EBD after graduation through courses and other efforts designed for faculty and practicing dentists. Readers who are ready to explore further will find a number of useful articles in our Resources section. These articles provide background information, describe aspects of the featured programs, and make the case for implementing EBD.

In June, 100 ADEA CCI Liaisons representing 41 schools gathered in Chicago for our sixth ADEA CCI Summer Liaisons Meeting. Interspersed with other sessions exploring this year’s theme, “Building Partnerships and Collaborations for Change and Innovation,” seven liaisons and one dental student presented the projects they are currently undertaking on their campuses. PowerPoint slides from the meeting presentations are available on the ADEA CCI website.
