Developing and Assessing Critical Thinking

Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President, ADEA Policy Center
Few would argue with the assertion in the new Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards that, “Critical thinking is foundational to teaching and deep learning in any subject.“ Nevertheless, coming up with evidence to demonstrate compliance with CODA standard 2-9(1) is easier said than done.

In this issue, we look at some concrete ways of implementing the standard, and we take a step back to gain a better perspective on what educators mean by critical thinking and its role in clinical practice.

In our Guest Perspective we hear from Dr. David C. Johnsen, Dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, who draws on the work of his colleagues in education to inform his own understanding of the topic. In our Campus Spotlight we visit The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston, where the successful use of portfolios to assess critical thinking in the dental hygiene program has inspired their use in the dental school as well. Finally, we talk with Dr. Patricia E. Benner, lead author of Educating Nurses: A Call for Radical Transformation, part of the Preparation for the Professions series commissioned by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In this issue’s Interprofessional Spotlight she shares the thinking behind the authors’ recommendations related to critical thinking in nursing education. We hope these articles will spur some fresh thinking and further discussion among dental educators on this challenging topic.

1. CODA standard 2-9 says, “Graduates must be competent in the use of critical thinking and problem-solving including their use in the comprehensive care of patients, scientific inquiry and research methodology.”
