Overall Competency Assessment
Dr. Eugene L. Anderson, Chief Policy Officer and Managing Vice President, ADEA Policy Center
At last summer's ACEA CCI Liaisons meeting, one message came through loud and clear: schools want help in deciphering how they can meet the new Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) predoctoral standards. They especially want guidance in how to meet the requirement to "assess overall competency, not simply individual competencies in order to measure the graduate's readiness to enter the practice of general dentistry."
The need for assistance in this area is consistent with the findings of the Survey of Assessment Practices in U.S. Dental Schools conducted by ADEA CCI in 2008. It showed that fewer than ten percent of dental schools had a comprehensive assessment in place. Fortunately, several models exist that other schools can borrow from or replicate.
One of the best known has been developed by the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) and is described in this issue's
Campus Spotlight. Another can be found at the University of Michigan. Our guest commentator, Dr. Marilyn Lantz describes UM's approach to global assessment and shares her thoughts on how other schools can meet this CODA standard in our
Guest Perspective. Finally, we share a widely used tool for determining overall competency developed by our colleagues in physical therapy in our first
Interprofessional Spotlight. When we met last June, Liaisons also voiced a desire to learn more about what is happening in education among the other health professions. We hope that this new feature proves both inspirational and instructive as we work to promote change and innovation at our own institutions.

ADEA CCI Summer 2012 Liaisons Meeting
The theme for this year's meeting is Building Partnerships and Collaborations for Change and Innovation. Goals of this meeting will be to (1) engage participants in discussions about unique partnerships and collaborative efforts that have been developed at their institutions, (2) provide content that will help prepare liaisons to play important leadership roles in facilitating the development of partnerships and collaborations, and (3) provide opportunities for liaisons to develop team building skills that can facilitate collaborative relationships.
