Sen. Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) introduced an amendment to the Senate’s proposed Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, S. 744. The amendment added language to a pending immigration bill that would extend federal student loans, work-study funds, and other federal support to students who are in the United States illegally.

The amendment would extend Title IV benefits to people brought to the United States illegally before the age of 16, as well as those with provisional legal status. The bill passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The next step is consideration by the Senate as a whole.
