Historically, people with cognitive, hearing or visual impairments have been directed to seek out a special care dentist or a dental school for their oral health needs. Do these referrals occur because general dentists lack the dental knowledge and skills to treat these patients? In some cases, yes, but more often dentists are simply unfamiliar with these populations and lack targeted training in how to communicate effectively with special needs patients.

“Some people say students don’t take self-assessment seriously,” says Dr. Diane Hoelscher, Chairperson of the Department of Patient Management at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry (UDM), but she doesn't dwell on this or on the other concerns that skeptics voice about self-assessment. “I think the value is in the process,” she says with confidence. “We are engendering in our students the ability to look and see and think about their work.”

“I used to complain that the amount and quality of research on orofacial pain were low and poor. Then one day my division head said, ‘Why don't you do something about it?’” So began the journey of one academic dentist who started as a clinical educator, became a clinical researcher, and now works to facilitate the research of others on a national scale.
